It’s a very scenic bike ride – in fact, the inspiration for Lion King’s Pride Rock can be found in Hell’s Gate National Park. The adrenaline rush that comes with biking a few meters away from where wild gazelles, giraffes, and all sorts of animals roam is, for me, the very definition of a bucket list. If you must do one thing in Kenya, this should be it. When I did my initial research, I almost opted not to go to Kenya because other blogs kept on telling me that it costs a fortune, but I wanted to prove to myself that I can go on a dream destination on a budget – and I did!
We often associate going on a safari as expensive. You know what else comes to mind when you think about African safaris? Cost. The concept of a safari – where animals roam freely along endless savannahs, hunting for prey and enjoying the African sun – was something new, something unreal, something left to the imagination. As someone who grew up in the city, I thought places like these only exist in storybooks, in animated graphics. Who can blame me? This scene has been stuck in my head ever since I was a child. When I think about the country, what I remember are images of Simba being raised by Rafiki in Pride Rock as the Circle of Life soundtrack plays. No other destination captures the imagination like Kenya. Kenya – the land of safaris, nature, and the wonderful unknown.
